In Japan, they often over-wrap (in other words, double-bag) things you buy at stores. Although we don't need that much to carry what we bought they just give it to us. I think it's a total waste.

PROBLEM : Triple-bagging
One thing makes me crazy in Japan: when buying some foods, for example tofu, I get it wrapped in... at least 3 plastic bags, one for the tofu, which is wet, one for the wet plastic - it could run out in my bag- and one to transport the whole thing. That's for just one cube of tofu! When I arrive home, I have with only one cube of tofu and a half garbage bag full of plastic. What do the Japanese people think about this?

PROBLEM : Salmon vs. electricity
I have watched this past three months as they have clearcut the hill across the valley from my home. Deforestation and loss of old growth forests is a topic of considerable concern to environmentalists here in Oregon. I should also point out that half the homes in my area have signs in the front yard reading "This family is supported by timber dollars." It is not going to be a quick cure. Salmon are a big problem also. It looks like we can have cheap electricity or salmon, but not both.

I live in Honmoku, a part of Yokohama. 3 years ago a little hill in my area was suddenly destroyed and the land flattened. Developers were planning to build condominiums there. But because of the recession in Japan, they could not build it. So the land is vacant now. I asked the building department of city office whether it was possible to change topography, legally or not. They said that land owners have such a right. If the land is in a urban district, there are not many regulations concerning environmental conservation, saving trees, etc. There are lots of little hills in Yokohama. I was surprised to know that those hills can be destroyed! The topography can be changed!

I am particularly fond of old growth forests. On the west coast of the US there are trees that are so big around that it takes several people holding hands to encircle it. Who would want to cut that down??? I lived in a redwood forest in Northern California where the old growth had been cut. People used the huge stumps for tree houses....forts to play in...even they were magical and beautiful. So, I say NEVER CUT DOWN OLD GROWTH! Anyone out there agree? Do you have old growth in some of the other countries?

We are residents of the beautiful city of Linkoping. Our water comes from two waterworks with water intakes located in two nearby rivers. The other main water concerns for us here in Linkoping (situated in the southern part of Sweden, some 200 kilometres from Stockholm): 1) What to do with the sludge from water- treatment plants? Is the sludge recycled by putting it on your arable land? 2 ) Acid rain, though the situation is growing better just now! We have had many problems especially with winds from south eastern part of the continent.

This river is where students from our school swim and fish during the summer. Also, we have decided to no longer meet at this place because we are unsure of the effects. We believe it is being caused by runoff from any of the four golf courses that border the river. We are seeking some advice. We plan on contacting a local office of the E.P.A. nearby and see if things improve enough by next summer to return. What else do you suggest?

PROBLEM : Multiplying zebra mussels
We are four girls in grade 7 at Winston Churchill Public School Chatham Ontario Canada. Our names are Jordan Sinclair, Caitlin Kelly, Jessica Field and Lauren McIntyre. We are all 12 years old. Our local problem is the pollution in the Great Lakes, especially Lake Erie since that is where we get our drinking water. Our pollution problem is that toxic chemicals are being put into our lake. These chemicals are killing some species of fish and birds and leading others to extinction. There has been traces of nearly 1,000 different substances along with heavy metals and toxins such as D.D.T and other pesticides found in it. Small organisms and small plants at the bottom of the food chain have been covered with toxic waste so when the small fish eat them the poison travels up the food chain so we have to be careful about the fish we eat. Another major problem is the zebra mussels. They multiply very fast and since they come from Europe they have no natural enemies to control their numbers. We had Greenpeace working on the lakes for a couple of days they took some tests and found that our lake is getting cleaner it still has many invisible and harmful toxins in it.

SOLUTION : Raise efficiency of chemical plants
SOLUTION : Regularly tune-up boats
We are five grade seven students from Winston Churchill Public School in Chatham Ontario Canada. We are all twelve years of age. We have provided a list of water pollution problems and possible solutions in our area. These include: Problem areas: Lake St. Clair, Thames River, The Great Lakes and small creeks and streams in the area. Sources: Chemical plants such as Dow, Esso etc. Boats that are not properly tuned and are leaking oil and gas in to our lakes, rivers and streams. Public pollution is also a problem. People throwing their garbage, fencing, refrigerators and stoves are some of what we have found. Possible Solutions: Chemical plants being made more efficiently and boats receiving tune-ups on a regular basis. Public pollution depends on the people's attitudes toward pollution. Effects of Water Pollution, Mercury Poisoning: One of the most significant harm to human health is pollution in the water. There was a town in Japan called Minimata Bay in the towns people were exposed to mercury poisoning by eating fish and shellfish that were caught close to shore. The mercury was being discharged in to the bay by a local factory. The mercury was not detected until a large number of kids were born with physical problems. Public Water: A wide variety of toxic compounds are in public drinking water, although mostly in small amounts. Almost nothing is known about the long-term health effects of the containments. Water is chlorinated to kill more bacterial contaminants. Although our water is not polluted very much yet, it is getting so that it will be in the very near future.

Shimane Prefecture is located in the west of Japan in the Japanese sea coast, in the north of Hiroshima. We grow rice, and have the Chugoku mountain range in the middle of the prefecture. We have two lakes, Shinji-ko and Naka-umi. Some ranching is also practiced in the Oki area. I live in Matsue city. Surrounded by both Shinji-ko and Naka-umi, I am concerned with the pollution of the lakes which major pollution source is house waste water. Since I think that pouring used oil into the sewage is a major cause of this pollution. In our region, the community is making soap out of used cooking oil. Since this soap is bio-degradable, I think I can counter the pollution problem by promoting the manufacture and use of this soap. Through computer networking, I think it will be very useful to exchange ideas such as ours, and find various solutions to common environmental problems. I think I can help to solve environmental problems in other areas by giving information and ideas we have and share them with other people.

SOLUTION : Using alternative power sources (solar, wind, etc)
SOLUTION : Stricter laws to control industry, vehicle emissions
SOLUTION : Legal implementation of lead-free petrol, catalytic converters
SOLUTION : Introduction of electricity to entire population to stop pollution from squatter camps
ORGANIZATION : ST. ALBAN'S COLLEGE
The ecological problem that I am interested in is air pollution. In South Africa huge amounts of polluting gasses are spewed into the atmosphere. This pollution comes from industries and from fires in homes. In South Africa we have a big problem with people living in informal settlements (squatter camps). More than half of these people don't have electricity, and they burn coal and wood for cooking their food and heating their homes. The air pollution caused by industries in South Africa can be divided into groups; pollution from dust and pollution from emission of noxious gasses and smoke. Since South Africa's economy is based on mining there are huge mine dumps, containing mainly sand and dust. This dust is easily blown away and into the air. Many factories in South Africa emit smoke and other gasses, and this is the main reason for the large amounts of devastating acid rain that has fallen on our Eastern Highveld (a region of wood production and great beauty). One of the biggest culprits is the power plants. In South Africa there is only one company that provides electricity; ESKOM. Of the 29 powerplants in South Africa 1 is nuclear, 1 is gas turbine, 2 are pumped storage and 2 are hydroelectric. The rest are coal- powered. This means that they spew tonnes of sulphur and carbon dioxide into our air. Luckily for all South African our cities are relatively small and there is relatively low traffic. This results in the cities not being very polluted. If South Africa does not start taking step to control air pollution I believe that we will get huge problems; our farms will have lower production and our people will be sick. I believe than our coal power plants must be reduced, and we should start using alternate power sources (solar, wind, etc). Also stricter laws must be introduced to control industry emissions and stop the pollution of the air by vehicles (this could include regulations about cars only using lead-free petrol and catalytic converters). To stop the pollution from squatter camps electricity should be introduced to everybody. I would like to hear about the other ecological problems our world is suffering from, and I will gladly tell anybody more about air pollution in South Africa.

We have a very severe pollution problem (air pollution) which will be very difficult to solve, I'm afraid. It is caused by the steel industry which employs some 26,000 workers. The steel manufacturing is not really a question of economy (the gov't buys up all the steel); it is strictly a question of employing workers...also, there is no highway which rings the city, thus all of the traffic that comes through the city creates a concentration of air pollution. Possible solution: I'm not sure, but building a ring around the city might make a difference in the air pollution problem. We also want to promote the use of bicycles.

When doing our eco-audit and School Agenda 21 we also studied transportation to school. We asked both the students and the staff about the way they come to school: by bus, cycling, walking, by car, etc. To get a reliable set we did it both during the cold and the warm season. Our aim is to encourage more people to use public transport or "pooling".

EMAIL : econews@mukla.gn.apc.org
COUNTRY : KENYA
PROBLEM : Poor waste management
SOLUTION : Environmentalists world-wide applying pressure
SOLUTION : Individual responsibility, networking
Waste management is fast becoming a global problem that opposes conventional solutions. Although it is not as highlighted as the global warming and ozone depletion issues, it is a potential time bomb that could explode at any time. In Kenya, where I come from, every household turns out 1/2 kg. of waste per day. Only 1/8 of it is recycled. The rest is dumped in open ground and left to deplete or pollute the environment. The world needs to come together and find ways to manage our waste more effectively, going beyond recycling. Most third world countries have rudimentary solutions for waste management and these are overshadowed by political strife and ethnic clashes. Environmentalists world-wide need to put more pressure on African countries to take waste management seriously and find lasting solutions. At the Global Youth Forum, various paths are being explored to manage our waste more efficiently. At the African delegates conference on August 14th I hope to draw attention to waste management as an area that needs more active work to combat. It is interesting to note that astronauts on the moon can see the Great Wall of China alongside huge waste dumps in the U.S. We are all citizens of the world. A problem in one country is a problem for all of us. Individual responsibility and networking are ways that will help find solutions that last. Everyone needs to pitch in; you and me. Get in touch on the 'Net and let's work together.

Our high school in Pawtucket, Rhode Island recycles soda cans everyday. With about 700 kids in the school, that's a lot of cans every day! Pawtucketalso has started recycling its trash at the curb side. Clear glass, cans and some plastics go in separate containers from paper trash and from real garbage-trash. Some towns nearby use special bags for pickups that people have to buy on their own. The more trash they make, the more they have to spend to get it taken away! That cut down on a lot of trash!

We feel uncomfortable when we see the cans being thrown on the road and shore. So I suggest that people pay money when they buy drinks, and after they finish drinking and return the drink container, they get the money back. For example (In Japan), I think it better to establish such a system. At first, those who buy drinks should pay 10 yen. After drinking, they can get their 10 yen back, when they return the container. This system should be available everywhere. I am sure that it will be very effective. What do you think this idea? This system is already being tried in Japan, and is said to be successful.

Let us explain about conditions in Japan. We already started some recycling. We collect paper, cans, and other stuffs. But, I think the recycling systems are not perfect. Some people are trying to collect those stuffs, but others don't care about it. And there are problems in these systems. In Japan, treatment of garbage differs from region to region. For example, the city of Fujisawa has separate garbage bins for collecting cans and glasses. But Kamakura (neighboring city) doesn't have such a system. Trash is disposed of in plastic bags. Here's another example of how the two cities differ. Fujisawa collects garbage and plastic wastes separately. The plastic is crushed and then buried. Kamakura collects the two together and burns them together. The ways of collecting, frequency of collecting and ways of separation are all different.

PROBLEM : Residual sludge from sewage treatment factories
SOLUTION : Use as fertilizer
SOLUTION : Power buses with methane gas derived from sewage sludge
We are five girls from Linkoping (150.000 inhabitants). In Sweden, it is the 5th largest town!!We are studying at Birgitta High School. In Linkoping we have a combined heat and power (CHP) plant. It is producing both electricity and hot water for district heating purposes. Every year, the Garstad CHP plant receives 200,000 tons of sorted household waste from a large number of municipalities in southern Sweden. This is equivalent to the household waste produced by about 500,000 inhabitants. At Garstad, the waste is converted to useful energy instead of being deposited in landfills. This corresponds to a saving of approximately 50,000 tons of oil every year. The Garstad CHP Plant annually produces over 500,000 MWh of district heat and 200,000 MWh of electricity. This is equivalent to 40 per cent of Linkoping's district heating energy and 25 per cent of the electricity demand. We are proud of this way of taking care of our household waste. One of our big environmental concerns that we face in Sweden, is what to do with remaining sludge from the sewage treatment works. One possible way is to hand it over to our farmers to be used as fertilizer. But they are not too happy about having it, because of the content of the remaining heavy metals. Experiments are done, trying to extract methane gas from the sludge, and with the methane gas drive our local buses. How do you tackle this problem, if you have it?

Ethiopia was one of oldest and most touristically attractive countries in Africa. However, after more than 30 years of war our home is destroyed. Imagine what 30 minutes of war can destroy; 30 years of war is so hard even to think about it. The people and environment have been destroyed for that long. However, after that we are still not taking care of the forests and not rebuilding the environment which has been destroyed. The gov't is not doing anything to help or improve the environment. This is one of the reasons our people are starving (chemicals and bombs have ruined the land). We think that the government of Ethiopia has the responsibility of building the country, protecting the environment and working with anyone who wants to help in order to save our people from hunger. TNH is an organization providing additional (non - school) ecological education. It unites all of the educational ecological work, which is carried out in the Tutaev region. At the beginning of summer 1994 the American non government organization ICE (International Clearinghouse on the Environment) provided an Environmental Grant of $1450. from the program, Sowing Seeds for Democracy: We purchased a computer and equipment for electronic mail. We now have communication with many educational and scientific organizations and we work together sharing information on environmental and ecological questions and problems.

You can make a simple project with the children setting an example and criticizing adults also. For example, our colleagues (children from clubs "Gree Sail" from the Nizhniy Novgorod city) have organized an interesting exhibition on one of the central streets of the city. They have exhibited whole rubbish, which they have collected at a clearing of a small river, leaked on territory of city. This rubbish had been left in river by adult people. The exhibition has caused the very large indignation of stupid adults. It is good, when the children is better, than their parents, because the children will live and to decide problem of environmental hereafter. Therefore I think, that it is necessary that very many entities pay for ecological education now.

PROBLEM : Decrease in farming due to drought
PROBLEM : Shortage of drinking water
PROBLEM : Polluted rivers
SOLUTION : Germinate, transplant trees
SOLUTION : Paper recycling
SOLUTION : "Clean up Australia Day" campaign
Wiley Park is situated in Sydney, Australia on the east coast of the Continent. In Australia we farm wheat, barley, rye as well as cattle and sheep. Unfortunately farming has decreased dramatically in recent years due mainly to the drought we are currently experiencing. The dry spell has also taken its toll on the cities where water restrictions are continually being tightened. At present our school is involved in two environmental projects. The first is the Trees for survival program - we are given seeds to germinate and these are then transplanted into larger pots and cared for in our shadehouse until they are big enough to be planted out in areas of Sydney where trees have been cleared to make way for roads etc. This project is undertaken with the support of our local rotary club. The second project involves the recycling of paper. The school recycles the paper and we are given reams of paper in return. This project iscoordinated by an organisation called SCRAP and a paper recycling companyVISYBOARD. Many schools participate in both projects. I am also concerned about the condition of our waterways. Many of our rivers are polluted but we have a campaign called "Clean up Australia Day" each year. This has been very successful and I feel that if this was run worldwide it would be great progress for the environment.

Puollanmaki secondary school has participated in the process of publishing Rescue Mission: Planet Earth; Children's Edition of Agenda 21 based on the results of the Rio Summit 1992 and initiated by Peace Child International Headquarters, England. We sent several art works, poems, interviews and other texts and made a summary of the chapter about fresh waters. We also sent one student to the Editorial Meeting held in August 1993. The book was published in English in April 1994 and we were asked to translate it into Finnish so that the original idea of letting the young people have the responsibility could be sustained. The Finnish version was ready in the spring 1995. During this process we had several contacts with the Finnish Environmental Ministry, the National Board of Education and the UN Association. We also had some publicity in the media. At the same time we had started our own School Agenda 21. The first task was to make an Eco-Audit about our school practices, e.g. waste management, traffic arrangements and energy use. After the survey the students made a list of proposals and we held a School Council Meeting with representatives of all personnel groups and some experts in which the proposals were discussed. Then the first action plan was made.

PROBLEM : Lack of consciousness regarding composting, garbage separation, recycling
SOLUTION : Sharing ideas via computer networking
Klippan is a town (17000 inhabitants) situated in the Northwest of Scania, which is located in the very south of Sweden. Scania is a peninsula, about 10000 square kilometres big. Klippan is surrounded by 50/50 forest and farmland. There are many lakes and creeks in Scania. Just a bit south of Klippan there is mainly farmland, where we grow: wheat, oat, barley, rye, potatoes and corn. In and around Klippan we have quite a lot of light industries, eg: factories that produce paper, plastic, gelatin, varnish and paint. We don't have much pollution because we have very strict environmental laws. Our biggest problem for now is to get people conscious about the importance of composting, garbage separation and recycling. We have already partly solved that issue, but there are still a lot of people who don't care, but according to the agenda 21 agreement and schedule the problem will be solved in a couple of years.Through global computer networks we can share ideas and thoughts about environmental issues. Since our environmental consciousness is quiet high here in Sweden, you could perhaps take use of some of our solution.

SOLUTION : Conservation, education
SOLUTION : Individuals informing each other using uncensored exchange
The city of Victoria is the capital of British Columbia, and can be found on the southern tip of Vancouver Island. Located on the west coast of Canada, British Columbia is Canada's link to the Pacific rim. We have the luxury of both mountains to the east and ocean to the west. Tourism is one of the largest industries throughout all of British Columbia, and as such it is in our interest to maintain our diverse environment. Despite our obvious need to ensure the stability of our ecosystems, over logging and over fishing are major issues that are always in the provincial media. Certain instances such as the attempted logging of pristine old growth forests in Clayoquot sound raised international attention and protests. While this international media coverage led to the B.C. government banning logging throughout the area, many other environmental travesties fail to get the same media coverage, and go un-challenged. The solution of our environmental concerns is conservation. As citizens of British Columbia, we must ensure that we educate both ourselves and the rest of the world on environmental issues. One of the advantages of newly emerging media forms (such as html), is the power that individuals now have to inform others.

SOLUTION : Program with Audubon Society for education concerning birds
SOLUTION : Teach how to garden while conserving water
SOLUTION : Encourage students to study current issues, express themselves
Short introduction of geographical location, nature, industry, agriculture. Green Valley, Arizona is located about 70 kilometers south of Tucson, Arizonaand about 60 kilometers north of Nogales Arizona/Mexico a city that straddles the international border with Mexico. We live in the Santa Cruz Valley of the northern Sonoran Desert (approx. 30 cm rain per year). The valley floor (elevation 2,500 feet) is primarily scrub desert currently dominated by Mesquite trees and low brush, formerly grassland before drought and overgrazing of cattle by Spanish and Anglo settlers in the late 1800's resulted in erosion and the spreading of woody plants and cacti. - What are the main concerns regarding your local environment? Over pumping ground water, protecting the many rare snakes and lizards from collectors, accommodating a wide range of land uses (mining, ranching, tourism, recreation, open space, etc.), protection for native and migratory birds, cacti preservation, and keeping the harsh but fragile desert intact with the massive influx of people from the other United States to the north and Mexico to the south are some of the main environmental concerns. - What kind of help can you or your organization provide to solve those local problems? Continental School, grades K-8 (students ages 5-14), presents an integrated curriculum of environmental education with numerous field trips to the Santa Rita Experimental Range that borders the school campus and classroom studies of the many historical and current facts about the Sonoran Desert. We work with the Audubon Society to help students to learn more about the fascinating world of birds in the desert. Gardening with the wise use of limited water supplies is practiced at several grade levels at Continental School. Students are also encouraged to study current issues, keep up with environmental political activity, and express their opinions on environmental topics. - How could other people or organizations (from another city or another country) help you to solve those problems? It would be a great help to know what others are doing to address similar issues of how to make it possible for people to live on the land without making it unliveable. - In what way can you help other people in other cities or countries to solve their environmental problems? We could share some of the successes we have had with a schoolwide recycling project, moving the classroom outdoors for lessons that get the students in touch with the natural environment, water wise gardening techniques, hydroponics projects, and building a greenhouse for students to grow plants for themselves, their families, and the community.

SOLUTION : Incorporating pollutant in environment
Do you hear the sound of people talking when your are home, during the day or night? Do these sounds disturb you or help you to concentrate on your activities? Here in Japan the houses are quite small and the walls are like paper. Sounds from neighbours enter one's space day and night. Do you have this problem in your country? Are there sounds that you dislike? How do you get rid of them psychologically? I had problems with a construction site just in front of my house. One way of getting rid of it was to include it in my own sound sphere. I did that by recording the construction sounds and playing them back all the time. They became a part of my chosen environment; This tactic worked quite (?) effectively. Have you had any some experiences like that? Do you have, for example, any trucks running about your district at 6 in the morning, blaring nationalistic enkas (songs) at a very high volume through very bad speakers?
