Welcome to another edition of GDRC Mosaic!
This month, GDRC Mosaic is being sent to
more than 2,000 subscribers in 130 countries worldwide.
THIS MONTH'S SPOTLIGHT: InfoPac on the 3R Concept,
from GDRC's Programme on Urban Environmental
Management.
While '3Rs' stand for reduce, reuse and recycle,
the concept itself goes beyond just better waste
management and calls for the building of an economy
based on the life-cycle approach, covering both
sustainable production and sustainable consumption.
The basic idea of a 3R approach is a shift away
from a mass consumption society to one that is
based on a life-cycle, sound material flow society.
The 3R concept is an umbrella that brings together
different concepts to enable a coherent and
integrated approach to sustainability.
GDRC has been working on these and related issues.

FOCUS ON GDRC: LEARNING LESSONS
Ultimate end-user: A kid!
With more and more emphasis on producing
information and 'pushing' it out for consumption,
a clearer understanding of what is needed by
the user is becoming increasingly important.
Presenting information in a way that the user
can understand becomes very critical. An
excellent example is that of a kid. In fact a
kind, a young child, can be considered as an
ultimate ennd-user of the information:
Using a kid as an end-user of your information
has two meanings – firstly, it means that there
is a need to explain what you are disseminating
easily so that even a kid can understand;
secondly, kids are our future anyway!
It may not be directly relevant to a kid -
but the message should be easy enough so that
even a kid can understand. And if we change the
behaviour of a kid towards sustainability, we
are on our way to change the family's behaviour
too!
