FOCUS ON GDRC: LEARNING LESSONS

THIS MONTH'S SPOTLIGHT: SMEs and the Environment from GDRC's Programme on Sustainable Business.

"Most economies of developing countries are characterized by small and medium centerprises (SMEs). How can they be made more environmentally firendly? "

Out of 75 million enterprises across the world, 90 percent are SMEs (small and middle size enterprises) - particularly in developing countries.

They contribute substantially to entrepreneurship, innovation, economic growth and job creation. SMEs also form a critical link in the production process chain.

But they also suffer from lack of human capacity, finance, and market access. To make them more responsive to global trends, they need to be a critical target to foster environmental sustainability as a 'good business'.

GDRC has been working on these and related issues . Resources on this topic are available at: http://www.gdrc.org/sustbiz/for-sme.html

FOCUS ON GDRC: LEARNING LESSONS

Information Literacy

Information Literacy is defined as the ability to know when there is a need for information, to be able to identify, locate, evaluate, and effectively use that information for the issue or problem at hand.

This is an important skill that each and everyone of us have to possess - something that has become apparent as GDRC developed over the years.

The information explosion has meant that the information you want is out there - someone already has it. What we need is a way to search for it, a way to understand, package and use it for our needs.

How important is it compared to other skills and knowledge, particularly in this information age? How do we develop information literacy? What formal and informal skills can we use for this?

Interesting questions - that we hope we can explore in GDRC's Learning Lab and its programmes.
