This Months Highlight: Environmental education
from the GDRC Programme on UEMRI
"Everything boils down to education and greater awareness
- how can we develop a consistent strategy?"
Implementation of every environmental policy, programme,
project and plan comes down to the same common
denominator - environmental education (EE). Effective
timely and targeted EE lies at the core of operationalizing
these paradigms, especially at the local level.
EE is about understanding the causes and effects, of
positive and negative aspects, of global and local issues,
of immediate and long-term issues, and of direct and
indirect impacts.
Highlighting this is the recent UN resolution declaring
the decade 2005-2015 as the 'International Decade of
Education for Sustainable Development'

FOCUS ON GDRC: Education research, and practice
This section focuses on information management lessons
learnt in coordinating GDRC's activities.
In attempting to develop the contents of many of GDRC's
programme pages, its usefulness to the user with respect
to education, research and practice is usually used as
defining parameters.
Building greater awareness (education), analyzing impact
assessments (research) and facilitating continual action
(practice) is key to ensure that the intended target
audience benefit from the programme.
It is difficult indeed to make such categorizations,
particularly with the overlap of needs and uses -
practitioners can easily draw lessons from the research
being done, educationists can tailor their courses with
the work that practitioners are doing etc. Yet, it is a
useful 'triad' that can help fill the gaps and mismatches
in a programme.
