A key feature of the savings and credit activities of a microcredit programme was its common fund. Membership fees, regular savings, fines imposed for not saving/repaying, interest payments, grants and other sources were used to build up the common fund. It also demonstrated the group's seriousness in credit management, which was used to convince banks to loan funds to the group.
