Current Governance Practices of Microfinance Institutions
Anita Campion
This publication is a product of a larger Governance Project which culminated in the “Effective Governance of Microfinance Institutions” conference held by the MicroFinance Network, ACCION International and CALMEADOW in Washington, D.C. October 18-20, 1998. The conference convened 152 participants from 36 countries representing approximately 50 leading microfinance institutions worldwide. The participants gathered to discuss the main issues related to microfinance governance, define effective governance practices and develop guidelines to improve the accountability and effectiveness of microfinance institutions. This publication presents coherent, practitioner-endorsed guidelines for all microfinance institutions to use in attempting to improve their structures and systems of governance. This document summarizes the findings of an anonymous survey sent to board members and managing directors of 42 experienced microfinance institutions worldwide. The survey was conducted in preparation for the “Effective Governance of Microfinance Institutions” conference held by the MicroFinance Network, ACCION International and CALMEADOW in Washington, D.C. October 18-20, 1998. The findings, which are categorized by for-profit and non-profit institutions, served as a basis for opening discussions at the conference. The document presents interesting indicators of possible trends and shortcomings in microfinance governance.
