Where do we go from here?

Action for the Informal Sector
M any researchers and authors of informal sector sector assert that the informal economic sector is transitionary - a 'temporary' stage as an economy matures and becomes more developed. What do we do? The informal sector definately has its benefits in being informal, which will be destroyed when it is formalized.

But it works under distinct disadvantages too, which can be overcome through prudent and focussed policies. What then is the nature of policies that we need to direct at the informal sector?

Transition Pathways:
Studies in Latin America show that about 20 to 25 percent of informal enterprises transition to formal status within five years when provided with simplified registration and access to finance (World Bank).

Digital Formalization: Mobile-money systems have brought financial access to over 450 million previously unbanked adults worldwide (Global Findex), enabling many informal operators to build transaction records and qualify for small business loans.

Policy Momentum:
By 2024, more than 60 countries had adopted national strategies on the transition from informal to formal employment following the ILO Recommendation No. 204 (2015), signalling a growing policy recognition of informality as a permanent yet improvable feature of economies.
