Food Security:
Food security is built on three pillars: Availability - sufficient quantities of food available consistently; Access - having sufficient resources to obtain food for a nutritious diet; and Use - based on knowledge of basic nutrition and care, as well as adequate water and sanitation.

GDRC aims to highlight the importance of food resources for our daily life. From the perspective of cities and urbanization, food security is also an important issue for healthy neighbourhoods/communities, and in reducing risks and uncertainties.

O
This month's random alphabet, is O. Among the programme themes and projects handled by GDRC under "O" include:

■  Oceans Conservation
"At first the oceans divided the continents. Then they brought them together ... "

Man's relation with the ocean has often been characterized by an 'out-of-sight-out-of-mind' attitude. Almost all of earth's water is there, along with most of its living creatures, both in terms of biomass and genetic diversity. The Ocean is what makes the earth livable - it powers the climate and weather, shapes planetary chemistry, regulates temperature and is the foundation of earth's life support.

But "conservation" is not a term we associate with the oceans. Along with coastal areas and small islands, GDRC is looking at the continuum of these three ecosystems where a majority of humanity depend on for their livelihood and food.
